Here are some of my favorite training rides. I start many of them from home or you can start at Wilderness Park.
CELO PACIFIC NORTHBOUND PENDLETON RIDE
This is mostly flat, with some rolling stuff — a very fast ride. You’ll do very well at El Do on Tuesdays if you can hang with these guys. It is one of my favorites because when I get dropped by the group, I can still catch them on the way back.
CSULB TO NEWPORT COAST
This ride can start from almost anywhere. It takes you south on PCH up the challenging Newport Coast Blvd., and back to PCH. It’s especially fun in the summer.
DAVE TOUR OF WILLIAMS (DToW)
This fun ride goes over Turnbull Canyon and Carbon Canyon, while riding through La Puente, West Covina, Diamond Bar, Chino Hills before heading back to Whittier.
GLENDORA MOUNTAIN ROAD (GMR)
INSANITY! HORS CATEGORIE! I LOVE IT! Well, it’s actually like a Category 2 climb or something, but it’s pretty tough.
TOUR DE CHUY
A Saturday morning favorite and affectionally named after me by some friends (who now drop me on the climbs), this ride starts northbound on the San Gabriel River to Whittier and up and over the 1200 foot climb of Turnbull Canyon. Through some nice yet hilly neighborhoods in Whittier and Hacienda Heights and then back through Whittier to the San Gabriel River, totaling approximately 43 miles.
TURNBULL CANYON WITH AVOCADO TERRACE
I like this as a breakfast ride before work or an afternoon ride after work (best during DST). It’s pretty quick but still an ass-kicker as you have to go up and over both sides of Turnbull Canyon with Avocado Terrace thrown in the middle.
This trail is good for running, MTB or CX, and can be stretched for a long ride or looped for a shorter one.
This is an 11 mile loop that is great for ‘cross training. Mountain bikers like it, too. Do at least two laps!
The Turnbull dirt ride can be made to be very tough and technical, or one or the other.
