It’s Been a While. . .

Posted by in MTB XC, Other Stuff, Race Reports, Run

This has been among the longest periods that I’ve gone without posting, but I promise it’s not been without reason.  I’ve only raced a few times since my last post, and I don’t like to post much if I don’t have anything to say (which should give you a little […]

Knobby Time Series Finale

Posted by in MTB XC, Race Reports

When it came time to race the finale for the Knobby Time series, I felt better about my fitness, but not exactly good about it. Claire was able to go with me to the race and during the drive she asked if I was nervous or excited. I knew that I had all but a guarantee to make the overall podium for the series just by finishing, and was thinking about my chances to win the whole thing. “I’m wondering whether I can beat Chris.”

It’s Knobby Time for Summer

Posted by in MTB XC, Race Reports

Lee Willmore told me that sometimes “life gets in the way of playing bikes,” and those words have been resonating lately.  I’ve been on and off the bike for various reasons: some having to do with motivation, or lack thereof, others having to do with opportunity and time, and lack thereof.  Life […]

Bonelli – The Revenge of the Fifth

Posted by in MTB XC, Race Reports

The second race at Bonelli marked the 5th stop on the Kenda Cup series this year. Every year starts with a Luke Skywalker-esque New Hope, and recently the Empire has been Striking Back (reference the title of this post) with a Vengeance (yes with a capital V).  The dark side of the force […]

Learning to Suffer Again

Posted by in MTB XC, Race Reports

After recovering from pneumonia, I caught a cold! Then . . . I caught a cold again! So I’ve “listened to my body” . . . and now here I am, a sickly weekend warrior who quickly forgot what it means to suffer. That’s what this race was about: learning to suffer again.

Looking Forward to 2014

Posted by in Cyclo-Cross, MTB XC, Other Stuff, Road, Run

I thought about perhaps writing a “2013 Year in Review,” which, I’ll admit, I don’t particularly like to write as much as I like to read. There are a few reasons, the most pressing is that I prefer to look to the future (not to mention that my 2013 racing year […]

Knobby Time Race #2

Posted by in MTB XC, Race Reports

Geoff Albert sent me a simple text message after the Knobby Time Series Opener: “How did the race go?” There are lots of ways to describe Geoff, crazy is among the first descriptors that comes to my mind, not as mentally unstable or clinically insane (although that may indeed be […]

Knobby Time Series Opener

Posted by in MTB XC, Race Reports

The first Sunday in July was the first race of the Knobby Time Series.  I had been putting in some pretty good training since Sea Otter, except for the last couple of weeks leading up to this series opener; Lee Willmore used to say that “sometimes life gets in the […]

Sea Otter Classic

Posted by in MTB XC, Race Reports, Road

There have been some momentous, life-affecting events that have transpired in the last 2+ months, both positive and unfortunate, that have had enough effect to keep me from posting my recollection of the 2013 Sea Otter Classic, but here it is. Finally.

It’s the Little Things . . . Surf City Half

Posted by in Race Reports, Run

In the past two years I have done a lot of little things that have resulted in big differences and I think I’ve had no problem posting them here and even thanking the people who helped me do those little things. The course was up PCH, then right on Seapoint, around “The Bluffs” then back to PCH, where we headed north again to Warner, then a U-turn back to downtown HB for the finish.

CXLA Mudfest

Posted by in Cyclo-Cross, Race Reports

Although CXLA was scheduled as a night race, I had an early wake-up because I had to be at work at 8:30AM, so I packed my bike and bike-stuff in the Go Chuy Go Wagon and headed off to enlighten and inspire the youth of America — or to bring them donuts at least. Matt moved up and I tried to stay with him through the first turn. I stayed with him through the first couple of turns after which I couldn’t manage the turns as fast as he did.

Long Beach Half Marathon

Posted by in Race Reports, Run

I made up my mind to run the Long Beach Half Marathon, along with Geoff and Syd. In the months following Pasadena-Sagebrush I ran some and rode a lot. Then I ran less and rode more and the more I rode, the less I ran. Then ‘cross season started and Geoff and Syd were registered for the half marathon and so was I . . . which brings us to present day.
